If I had to guess, I'd say Super Mario 64-2 was not significantly far along or had development issues unrelated to the N64DD. It instead evolved into Super Mario 128 which then had it's concepts turned into a couple of games such as Pikmin, Super Mario Galaxy, and of course Def Jam Vendetta. Unlike some other notable games from the N64DD planned releases, such as Ocarina of Time or Animal Forest, Super Mario 64-2 did not release on the N64 and was not directly up-cycled into a Gamecube game. One of these cancelled games was a Super Mario 64-2. Additionally the vast majority of its library was canceled, released on the N64 anyway, or shifted to the GameCube. Due to aforementioned sending out to die it sold poorly and was cancelled in other territories. So the N64DD was developed because of that Sega Foresight™ and was sent out to die in Japan.
